Last Tuesday night, once again, student-athletes gathered in the Hall of Fame room
for FCA. Each week the focus is to dig into the Word of God and find ways to apply it
to our lives as student-athletes. This time, that was done through a special speaker.
The guest speaker was a special one because it was Riley Northway’s (a sophomore
women’s basketball player) grandfather. Mr. Northway played basketball in college
professionally overseas, and even at one point, shared the court with Phil Jackson.
Most importantly, however, he is a Christian.
Riley’s grandfather made the trip with her dad from Huntsville, Alabama just to
share his faith with the crowd of students at FCA. Many athletes commented that it
was a refreshing change of pace to hear from an older man because his wisdom and
fear of the Lord were obvious in the stories that he told and the Scripture that he
Lipscomb FCA President, Dalton Keck commented,
“I personally left Tuesday night
both challenged and encouraged by Mr. Northway – challenged by his charge to become more like Christ and encouraged by the light of his life that continues to shine so brightly for Him.”
The verses that Mr. Northway left us with were from 2 Corinthians 3:16-18.
“But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
He left us with this challenge and question… has the “Christian veil” been removed from your eyes? In other words, we may think we have seen God because we have gone to church, chosen a Christian college for sport, or attended events that tell about Him… but the real question- the honest question Mr. Northway asked us to ponder and pursue is this: Have you met Him (Jesus)? Have you met Him with the veil removed from your eyes, and realized how deeply He loves you, and wants to live your life with you?
So today, we leave you with that same question. Have you met Jesus with the veil removed from your eyes, and realized how deeply He loves you, and wants to live your life with you? Are you willing to receive that invitation?
If you need help seeking Him, send us an email, and we would be happy to help be a ‘sign post’ to Jesus.
